Vietnam’s textile and garment industry aims to achieve USD48 billion in exports by 2025, up from USD44 billion last year. To meet this goal, businesses must prioritize sustainability, as global markets, particularly Northern Europe, demand eco-friendly and socially responsible products.
Sustainability: The Key to Growth
Employing about three million workers, Vietnam’s textile sector is a key economic driver. However, shifting consumer preferences require companies to adopt greener production methods. Nordic consumers favor garments made from organic or recycled materials, produced under strict environmental and labor standards.
Vu Duc Giang, Chairman of the Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association (VITAS), stresses the importance of “greening” production to meet European import regulations. Vietnam benefits from abundant natural raw materials like organic cotton, bamboo, and silk, which are biodegradable and chemical-free. The country’s traditions of silk weaving and hand embroidery further enhance its appeal in sustainable fashion.
The European Union’s Strategy for Sustainable and Circular Textiles, introduced in 2022, sets stringent regulations on textile imports. Businesses must:
- Use sustainable raw materials.
- Minimize waste and enhance recyclability.
- Adopt energy-efficient, eco-friendly production processes.
Trade Counsellor Nguyen Thi Hoang Thuy advises Vietnamese companies to secure international sustainability certifications like the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) and Fair Trade to maintain competitiveness.
Leading the shift towards sustainability, Century Synthetic Fiber Corporation utilizes recycled PET fibers, while Phong Phu Textile Garment Corporation implements waterless dyeing techniques and solar-powered factories.
Government support through financial incentives and policies can accelerate the transition to greener production. Partnering with international organizations can further help Vietnamese businesses adapt to evolving sustainability demands.
With strategic investments in eco-friendly technology and international certification, Vietnam’s textile industry is well-positioned to expand its market presence and meet global sustainability expectations.
